Instagram turns 12 years old: see its first picture

The social media platform, the 6th most popular in the world, celebrates its anniversary.

This digital platform was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010 to share pictures. Today, it's one of the world's biggest and most popular networks for sharing one's day to day.

Its founders, two 20-somethings studying at Stanford University, had a first project that didn't succeed, but their second collaboration is what we know today as Instagram: a social network where users could only upload -at the time- photos.

The first Instagram test was carried out by Systrom (pictured on the right) while travelling to Mexico as he worked on other projects, and his test was Instagram's first ever picture upload.

This social network's first photo was a stray dog and a foot, near a taco stall. Systrom captioned it 'Test', since it was uploaded a few months before Instagram's official launch on October 6th 2010.

Fun facts about this social network:

1- 995 photos are uploaded every second.
2- On average, users interact more during the afternoon, particularly between 1 PM and 5 PM.
3- It's currently the World's 6th most popular social media platform, after Facebook, Youtube, WhatsApp, FB Messenger and WeChat.
4- 33.1% of users are between 25 and 34 years-old.
5- 83% of users discover new products and services through this platform.

Instagram was acquired by Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook in 2012 for 1 billion US dollars. Zuckerberg himself posted a message on his official Facebook profile confirming the takeover and expressing his commitment to "building and expanding Instagram independently".
At the time, Kevin Systrom and Mike Kriege were still part of the company, but in 2018 both decided to walk away and look for new challenges.
